More orders of #57 stone leave this site for water problems than for anything else: a foundation wall that weeps after a storm, a downspout that has dug its own crater, a wall that pushed out because there was nowhere for the water behind it to go. Where in the country you are changes how urgent that job feels. On wet coastal ground and across the rainy south, water around a foundation is a year-round argument. In frost country it becomes a winter one, because water that cannot leave freezes, expands and pushes on whatever is holding it.
The size is an ASTM designation. Number 57 describes angular crushed rock graded between roughly 3/16 inch and 1 inch, washed so there are no fines in it. Everything else on this page follows from those two facts: consistent size, and nothing small enough to fill the gaps.
How #57 stone differs from #67, #8 and crusher run in the same trench
Most people arrive here having been handed a number by a contractor or a plan sheet. The useful question is what happens if you change it.
| Catalogue product | Rough size | What it does differently |
|---|---|---|
| #57 Stone | 3/16 to 1 in | The default open-graded size for drains, pads and backfill |
| #67 Stone | Slightly smaller | Tighter packing, a little less void space, used where a plan calls for it |
| #8 Crushed Stone | Smaller again | Fills joints and bedding, works where the larger size will not sit flat |
| #4 Crushed Stone | Larger | Heavy base and erosion work where the smaller sizes move |
| Crusher Run | Mixed, with fines | Compacts into a firm surface but will not drain |
| Drain Rock | Open-graded | Sold for the drainage role specifically |
The clean break in that table is between the open-graded sizes and anything carrying fines. If the job is to move water, stay above the line. If the job is to build a firm surface that vehicles roll on, Road Base or crusher run is the honest answer and this size is not.
The jobs a washed 3/4 inch stone is worth ordering for
Under a shed or garage slab. A compacted stone layer under a slab gives water somewhere to go and stops the soil below from wicking damp up into the concrete. It also gives you a flat, free-draining working platform.
Wrapped around perforated pipe in a French drain. Uniform sizing is the point. The gaps between pieces stay open and consistent along the length of the trench, so flow does not stall in one section and the trench does not silt closed from the inside.
Behind a retaining wall. A column of open stone behind the wall face lets water reach the drain at the base instead of building pressure against the back of the wall. On freezing ground that pressure is what tips walls forward over a few winters.
As a splash area under a downspout. A short apron of stone breaks the fall of the water, stops the soil scouring and spreads the flow before it reaches the lawn.
Depth for a shed pad, a splash strip and a wall backfill
Depth is the part most buyers guess at, and it is the part that decides whether the stone works.
- Shed or garage pad: 4 inches under a slab, more if the ground is soft. Screed it flat rather than compacting it hard, since this size will not lock up anyway.
- Downspout splash strip: 4 to 6 inches over a shallow scrape, edged so the stone does not migrate into the grass.
- French drain: bed the pipe on 2 to 3 inches, then bring stone at least 6 inches over the top of the pipe before the fabric folds closed.
- Wall backfill: a vertical column roughly a foot wide against the back of the wall, from the drain at the base up towards the surface.
Working out 40 feet of wall backfill
Three worked figures, all hypothetical, using length and width in feet and depth in inches.
Shed pad. 12 x 16 feet at 4 inches: 12 x 16 = 192 square feet, 192 x 4 / 12 = 64 cubic feet, 64 / 27 = 2.37 cubic yards. Crushed stone is figured at about 2,800 lb per cubic yard on this site, so 2.37 x 1.40 = about 3.3 tons.
Downspout splash strip. 2 feet wide by 10 feet long at 6 inches: 2 x 10 x 6 / 12 = 10 cubic feet, 10 / 27 = 0.37 cubic yards, or about half a ton. Small jobs like this are worth adding to a larger order rather than ordering alone.
Retaining wall backfill. A 40 foot wall, 4 feet tall, backfilled 1 foot deep: 40 x 1 = 40 square feet in plan, 40 x 48 / 12 = 160 cubic feet, 160 / 27 = 5.93 cubic yards, roughly 8.3 tons.
Run your own dimensions through the stone calculator if the area is not a simple rectangle. It accepts up to five separate areas and a depth anywhere between a quarter of an inch and 24 inches.
Choosing a quantity and a date for a clean stone order
Work out the volume, round up rather than down, and set both the tonnage and the delivery date here on the product page. Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code, and the truck needs a clear route to a dump spot it can reach without backing over a septic field or a soft lawn. Stone this size is easy to move by wheelbarrow once it lands, so a drop near the trench rather than in it is usually the better call. If your plan sheet names a size and you want a second read on it before ordering, send the dimensions through the contact page and ask for a quote by email.

Chicken coop run finally has proper drainage after putting this down, no more standing water after a storm. Took less than an hour to spread with a rake. It's stayed put even with the hens scratching around in it all day.
