The ground under a drive decides more than the stone on top of it. Red clay across the southeast holds water and turns greasy under a wheel. Glacial till in the north sits firm in August and heaves in February. The sandy coastal plain drains beautifully and then lets everything sink into it. Driveway gravel is a 3/4 inch crushed stone chosen for surfaces that vehicles cross, and how it performs on any given property has less to do with the stone than with what it is being asked to bridge.
That is worth saying plainly, because a great deal of gravel gets ordered to fix a drainage problem or a soft subgrade that more stone alone will not solve.
Choose driveway gravel if tires cross the same strip most days
The case for this stone is simple. It is crushed, so the pieces are angular and wedge against each other under a tire instead of rolling apart the way a rounded stone does. It is graded for traffic rather than for looks or for flow. The jobs it suits:
- A residential drive or its apron, new or being resurfaced.
- A turnaround or parking pad where cars sit, turn and reverse in the same few square yards.
- A farm lane or rural access track carrying equipment where paving makes no sense.
- A work yard or trailer bay that needs a firm, free-draining surface.
Skip it if the area is a dog run, a drain trench or a garden path
Three jobs come up often on this site that this stone is the wrong pick for.
A side-yard dog run wants something kinder to paws and easier to rinse. Angular 3/4 inch stone is sharp underfoot and traps waste in its gaps. Rounded River Rock or a smaller rounded gravel does that job better.
A French drain along a foundation wants a washed stone with no fines, so the voids stay open and the water keeps moving. Use #57 Stone, and keep anything carrying fines out of the trench.
A garden path wants a size that is comfortable to walk on, which 3/4 inch is not. Walkway Gravel is the 3/8 inch version of the same idea.
What clay, till and sand each do to the same load
- Clay that holds water. Stone pressed into wet clay disappears into it, then the clay works up through the layer. A separation fabric and a crowned surface do more here than another 2 inches of stone. Keep water moving off the drive rather than along it.
- Frost-belt till and loam. The freeze and thaw cycle lifts and drops the surface through late winter, which is why a spring top-up and a rake is the standard northern routine rather than a sign that something failed.
- Sandy or coastal soils. Drainage is not the problem. Containment is. Without an edge, stone migrates sideways into the lawn and the drive gets wider and thinner every year.
Two layers doing two different jobs under a turnaround
A drive that lasts is almost always two courses. The lower one is a compacted base with fines in it, usually Crusher Run or Road Base, laid on stripped ground and rolled. Its job is to spread the weight of the vehicle across the subgrade.
The upper one is the running surface: this stone, 2 to 3 inches of it, raked level over the compacted base. Its job is grip, drainage and appearance, and it is the layer you top up every year or two.
On an existing drive that only needs freshening, you are ordering the surface course alone. On bare ground, ordering the surface course alone is the most common mistake on this page, because 4 inches of loose stone over untouched soil ruts the first time a delivery truck uses it.
Sizing a 20 by 24 foot turnaround and a 90 foot approach
Both are hypothetical. This site's calculator figures driveway gravel at about 2,800 lb per cubic yard, or 1.40 tons per yard.
Turnaround, surface course. 20 by 24 feet at 4 inches: 20 x 24 = 480 square feet. 480 x 4 / 12 = 160 cubic feet. 160 / 27 = 5.93 cubic yards. 5.93 x 1.40 = about 8.3 tons.
Approach, refresh only. 90 feet long by 11 feet wide at 3 inches: 90 x 11 = 990 square feet. 990 x 3 / 12 = 247.5 cubic feet. 247.5 / 27 = 9.17 cubic yards. 9.17 x 1.40 = about 12.8 tons.
Odd shapes, a flared entrance or a drive that changes width are what the gravel calculator is for. It takes up to five areas at once and any depth between a quarter of an inch and 24 inches.
Rounding a figure and booking the drop
Round up rather than down. A drive that finishes half an inch thin looks fine on day one and shows tire tracks by the end of the season, and coming back for one more ton means arranging a second trip for a small quantity. Set the quantity and the delivery date on this page; delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code. Think about where the pile can sit without blocking the drive you are about to resurface, and leave the driver a clear straight approach. If you want your measurements checked first, the contact page takes a quote request by email.

A bit dusty
There was a fair amount of dust in the load.
Kevin M. · Indianapolis, IN · Verified Buyer
The driver eased it right up the gravel path and dropped the load exactly where I'd staked it out, not a mark on the lawn. Took him maybe ten minutes total and he was gone before I even finished my coffee.
