Most orders of this size are a second attempt. A channel was lined with something smaller, then a monsoon cell in the desert Southwest, a tropical downpour on the Gulf coast or a fast spring melt in the north picked the stones up and left them in a fan across the lawn. Large river rock is what gets ordered the second time, because weight is the only thing that keeps loose stone in a channel when water is moving.

The spec in four lines, and what each one rules out

Everything on this page follows from the product description, so it is worth reading the spec before the uses.

  • Size: 2 to 4 inches. A single piece is a handful. Expect variation inside that band and the occasional piece at or past the top of it.
  • Shape: naturally rounded. Shaped by water, not by a crusher. Rounded stones roll over each other under load rather than locking.
  • Color: tans, grays and browns. Natural variation, not sorted or dyed, and it does not fade.
  • Behavior: inert. It does not decompose, does not break down and does not need replacing on a cycle.

Two of those lines do the deciding. Rounded means it will never firm up into a surface. Two to four inches means it is too coarse to be comfortable and too heavy to be moved by anything short of a real flow of water.

Where large river rock works, and where the size fights you

The jobRight size here?Why
Dry creek channelYesWeight resists the flow that moves smaller stone
Pond and water feature borderYesReads as natural edging and stays where it is placed
Slope and embankment coverYesIndividual pieces are too heavy for runoff to carry
Accent and feature plantingYesScale is the point, next to finer ground cover
Bed ground coverUsually notGaps between pieces are wide and show fabric
Path or walkwayNoAnkle-turning underfoot at this size
Any drive or parking surfaceNoRounded stone ruts and spreads under a wheel

For the general-purpose landscape jobs on the right-hand side of that split, River Rock at 1 to 3 inches covers ground far better and takes less effort to spread.

What monsoon runoff, spring melt and coastal downpours each ask of a channel

The same channel is built differently depending on what fills it.

In the desert Southwest the flow is rare, violent and short. Channels are sized for a volume that arrives in twenty minutes, so the important detail is depth at the center line and a stable edge the flow cannot cut around. In frost country the water arrives slowly over weeks as snow melts, and the soil under the channel is saturated and soft the whole time, so a fabric layer and a firm base matter more than raw size. On the wet coast and through the rainy south, the channel runs often and the problem is the bank rather than the bed, which means carrying the stone further up the sides than looks necessary on a dry day.

One constant: line the whole channel with filter fabric first, and lap it up the banks. Soil that washes up between stones is what makes a two-year-old creek bed look like a weed strip.

A garden path, a hot tub pad and new lawn prep: three jobs to send elsewhere

Three requests come up often enough to answer directly, with the numbers, since the arithmetic makes the point better than an opinion does.

A garden path, 3 feet wide by 40 feet. At 2 inches that is 120 square feet, 120 x 2 / 12 = 20 cubic feet, 20 / 27 = 0.74 cubic yards, about 1 ton. But 2 inches of 2 to 4 inch stone is barely one stone thick, and every piece rolls underfoot. Use 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel or Walkway Gravel and keep this material for the edges.

A hot tub pad, 8 by 8 feet. At 4 inches that is 64 square feet, 64 x 4 / 12 = 21.3 cubic feet, 21.3 / 27 = 0.79 cubic yards, roughly 1.1 tons. A tub full of water needs a base that does not move, which means a compacted layer of Crusher Run or Road Base under a slab or pavers. Rounded cobble under that load simply rearranges itself.

New lawn prep. Not a stone job at any size. Grade with Fill Dirt and finish with Top Soil.

Yards and tons for a 38 foot dry creek channel

Take a hypothetical channel 38 feet long, averaging 3 feet wide, at 5 inches of stone. 38 x 3 = 114 square feet. 114 x 5 / 12 = 47.5 cubic feet. 47.5 / 27 = 1.76 cubic yards. River rock is figured at about 2,700 lb per cubic yard on this site, so 1.76 x 1.35 is roughly 2.4 tons, which is the closest listed figure and approximate for the larger size, since a load of 2 to 4 inch pieces carries more open space between them than the smaller stone does.

Two adjustments worth making before ordering. A channel is not a flat rectangle: if the center is deeper than the edges, take an average depth rather than the deepest point. And a meandering line measured along the curve is longer than the straight distance between its ends, which catches people out by a surprising margin. The river rock calculator accepts up to five areas and circles, so a channel with a pool partway down can be figured in one pass.

Flagging the drop, and moving stone this size by hand

One practical matter separates this size from every smaller one: you cannot shovel it. A shovel slides off rounded 3 inch stones, so the work is done by hand, by fork, or with a bucket. Plan on a slower spread than the tonnage suggests and on gloves.

That makes the position of the pile the single most important decision on delivery day. Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code, and the truck needs a clear approach and a dump spot on firm ground. Flag exactly where you want it, as close to the channel as the truck can safely get, and lay a tarp if the ground under the pile matters.

Set the tonnage and the delivery date here on the product page. For a channel that changes width along its run, measure it in two or three segments, add the yards, and send the figures through the contact page if you want a second read before booking.
