What Is Railroad Ballast?
Railroad ballast is a large, angular crushed stone, typically 1 inch to 2.5 inches, graded to interlock under heavy load while draining freely. Its primary job is to hold rail ties in place and keep water moving away from the track bed.
Beyond the rail yard, ballast makes an excellent foundation for heavy equipment pads, industrial access roads, and any application that needs a tough, free-draining base. For a finer compactable base, compare crusher run or road base.
