The commonest reason people order river rock is that something keeps washing away. A bed beside the downspout that empties itself into the driveway every storm, a strip along the foundation that is mud from November to April, a side yard the mower cannot save. Wood mulch floats, bare soil moves, and rounded stone does neither. That story plays out in different seasons depending on where you are: a downpour problem for most of the year on wet coastal ground and across the rainy south, a thaw-and-runoff problem every spring in frost country.

The material itself is simple. Naturally rounded stones sized between 1 and 3 inches, in earth tones running through tan, gray, brown and the occasional red. It does not break down, does not need replacing on a cycle, and does not change color as it ages.

Choose river rock if the ground has to stay covered and be looked at

The case for rounded stone is strongest where three things are true at once: water moves across the area, nothing needs to be driven on it, and somebody is going to look at it.

  • It is heavy enough to stay where you put it in runoff that would carry bark mulch off in one storm.
  • The rounded shape leaves large open gaps between stones, so water goes down through the layer rather than sitting on it.
  • It is inert. It does not decompose, does not need topping up every spring, and does not feed anything.
  • Rinsed with a hose it comes back to the color it went down in, which is the reason it suits front-of-house beds and edges.

Skip it if tires or a wheelbarrow have to cross it

The rounded shape is the whole problem here. Rounded stones roll over each other under load instead of locking together, so a surface made of them never firms up. Drive on it and it ruts, spreads and migrates to the edges; push a loaded wheelbarrow across it and the wheel digs in.

Take a turnaround or parking pad of 20 by 24 feet at 3 inches deep: 20 x 24 = 480 square feet, 480 x 3 / 12 = 120 cubic feet, 120 / 27 = 4.44 cubic yards, and at about 2,700 lb per cubic yard that is 6 tons. Six tons of rounded stone on a parking pad will be in the grass by the end of the season. The same pad done in Driveway Gravel over a compacted layer of Road Base holds, because the angular pieces bite into each other.

Two other places to pass: anywhere a mower deck can reach, since a thrown stone is worse than a thrown wood chip, and anywhere with a lot of leaf fall, because leaves settle into the gaps and are awkward to rake out.

A side-yard dog run that drains and rinses down

The side yard is where this material earns its keep. A strip that gets no sun, holds water, and is walked daily by an animal will not stay grass. Stone over a free-draining layer gives a surface that drains within minutes of rain, hoses clean, and does not turn to mud.

Two details make the difference between a dog run that works and one that does not. Edge it, with steel, timber or a set stone course, so the stone stays in the run instead of migrating into the lawn. And keep the depth modest, because a deep bed of loose rounded stone is uncomfortable underfoot for both of you.

An 8 by 40 foot run at 3 inches works out at 8 x 40 = 320 square feet, 320 x 3 / 12 = 80 cubic feet, 80 / 27 = 2.96 cubic yards, or about 4 tons.

The buried version: a French drain along a foundation

The same stone does a second, invisible job. In a drainage trench it surrounds the perforated pipe and holds open the space water travels through, and its rounded shape means it settles into a stable arrangement without packing tight.

A trench 18 inches wide, 30 feet long and 18 inches deep is 1.5 x 30 = 45 square feet in plan, 45 x 18 / 12 = 67.5 cubic feet, 67.5 / 27 = 2.5 cubic yards, about 3.4 tons. Line the trench with filter fabric first and fold it over the top of the stone before backfilling, or soil works down into the gaps and the drain silts closed. Where a plan specifies an angular graded stone for the trench instead, use #57 Stone, which packs into a slightly more predictable structure around pipe.

Surface course or drainage fill, and what changes underneath

The role decides what goes below.

RoleWhat sits underneathDepth
Decorative ground cover in a bedFilter fabric over graded soil2 to 3 in
Dog run or high-traffic stripCompacted base, then fabric3 in
Drainage trench or French drainFabric lining the whole trenchFull trench depth
Dry creek channelFabric, with larger stones set into a sand bedVaries with the channel

On soft or persistently wet ground, fabric alone is not enough. Stone laid on saturated soil presses in until the surface is uneven and the soil rises between the stones. Put a compacted layer of Crusher Run down first, then fabric, then the stone.

Picking a depth that covers without shifting underfoot

Depth is a balance. Too shallow and the soil or fabric shows through the gaps and weeds find the light. Too deep and the layer becomes loose enough to shift under every step. In a bed, 2 to 3 inches covers completely and stays put. In a trafficked strip, 3 inches is about the limit before walking on it feels unstable.

Once you have a figure, set your tonnage and a delivery date here on the product page. Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code, so have a dump spot ready on firm ground with a clear approach, and plan on a tarp if the pile lands on anything you care about. The river rock calculator will run any shape you have, including circles and up to five separate areas, if your beds are not tidy rectangles.

My wife wanted a xeriscape section by the mailbox instead of grass we kept killing. River rock did the trick. It's smooth underfoot and the mixed browns and grays look natural, not like a bag of aquarium gravel. Neighbors have already asked where we got it.

River rock around the koi pond, done. Took an afternoon to spread it and the color mix is better than the stuff I got at the box store years ago for another project.

Redid the ring around a maple tree that mulch used to eat away every year. River rock doesn't decompose or blow around in the wind, so this should be the last time I touch that spot for a while.
